For my entire adult life, one of my abiding passions has been to find ways to create magical moments, to turn ordinary ones into sacred ones.
Ritual is one of my favorite ways to do so.
When people think of rituals, they may imagine something elaborate. That is beautiful as well.
Perhaps you think of something tied to religion or to a certain setting or space.
That too can be lovely!
However, what a gift it is that ritual also only needs to take seconds or a moment of our time,
that it doesn’t require anything fancy or any special objects,
that we can do ritual just about any time and anywhere,
and that what ritual simply requires is our loving attention and intention.
For example, Bret and I have been relishing in morning walks every day on our precious land.
We take the walk together, but with enough space between the two of us that we can’t really see one another, and we remain silent.
It’s so beautiful to do this together, to support one another in this spiritual practice — both of us in the same general space but following the rhythm of our own unique souls, intuition, and sacred path.
For me, one of the rituals I am enjoying each morning is to walk down to the stream, dip my finger in the cool and refreshing waters and bring it to my third eye.
I use it as a daily morning ritual to set the intention of washing away any old, outdated, limiting ways of seeing myself, my life, others, and the world,
I say a prayer as I bring the water to my face, something like…
“May I see through the lens of love.”
“Spirit, lead me to seeing through your eyes — in whatever ways serve the highest good of all.”
This simple ritual only takes seconds, but it anchors this intention in,
it sends a signal to both my consciousness and subconscious and out to the greater and higher intelligence of Life of what I deeply value,
and it helps me keep my life aligned with these values — not impeccably, by any means, but certainly with much more likelihood than if I didn’t.
Since first studying home altars as a college student in my twenties, I’ve been fascinated by how powerful it is that part of our brain doesn’t know the difference between what actually happens and what we ritualize.
Therefore, just as experiences shape us into who we are — so too do the things that we simply ritualize.
If ritual is something you long for more of in your own life…
…this is some loving encouragement and big cheers to create that for yourself in the year ahead — to feel how easy and simple — and yet transformative — it can be.
