Because of neuroplasticity, we have an innate ability to rewire our brains for greater happiness, contentment, and joy ~ which is incredible.
I am excited to share a super simple and accessible (but powerfully effective and research-backed) technique to do so.
Chances are, you will instantly feel better as you put this into practice.
However, if you want your brain to readily land there on its own, you will want to train your brain through regular practice.
As you do, prepare to be amazed by how your entire life perspective changes.
Tip: while doing this practice, you may enjoy placing your hand(s) on your heart. Because of the profound mind-body connection, your heart then serves as a physical anchor of this emotional state, helping you more easily tap into joy whenever you place your hands there.
Now onto this week’s joy boost…
Do you know we naturally have a negativity bias?
It’s here for our survival ~ but not for our thriving.
As Positive Psychologist Dr. Rick Hanson explains: negative experiences are like Velcro in the brain and immediately stick.
However, positive experiences are more like Teflon and require us to hold them in our awareness for at least 20 seconds.
This is why you could have the most beautiful life, but if you don’t recognize it as such…
…it could pass you completely by (and you could miss all the potential for joy awaiting you).
Therefore, whenever you are experiencing a moment of peace, joy, contentment, wonder, delight, awe, etc…
…don’t miss it.
Use the mantra “savor” to soak it in with your full, glorious awareness.
Imagine yourself taking a photo with all your senses: smell it, hear it, feel the texture of it, soak up the positive feelings of it, taste it (if relevant), see all of the imagery (zooming in and out to notice some of the details you’d otherwise miss).
You can also do this aloud with a loved one and multiply joy together!
I’d love to hear how it goes. What are you savoring in your life, and how does it feel different when you do?
Sending so very much love into your day,
