One of our favorite evening rituals…
We go for a walk outside with the pups and take turns asking each other…
“What went well today?”
I ask Bret.
He answers.
Then, he asks me.
I answer.
And we keep going back and forth, over and over, until it feels complete.
Sometimes, we pause to ask more questions about what each other has shared, leading to wonderfully meaningful conversations.
Eventually, we circle back around to the question…
“What went well today?”
So many things happen in any given day, and our time together (like most couples)…
— especially time that is fully present and wholeheartedly focused on each other — is limited each day.
Therefore, we are committed to making those moments matter, connecting, and life-enhancing.
It’s not that we don’t talk about the challenges.
That’s so important in relationships — to be able to bring our greatest vulnerabilities and offer one another a safe haven and soft, loving landing space in the world.
However, we find this particular question to be an amazing way to scan our days and highlight those things that went well.
I love hearing Bret‘s replies, and I get to learn more and more about what delights him…
…which gives me invaluable glimpses into his heart and essence and teaches me so much about him…
…including ways I can help us continually design a life that prioritizes the things that mean the most to him and bring the greatest joy.
I also love being asked this question and getting an opportunity to notice the gifts and blessings from my day I may have otherwise missed.
In sharing them, the beauty of this life feels multiplied and even more pronounced.
The conversation just feels GOOD.
And — a lovely bonus…
…given what I’ve learned about the neuroscience of happiness over the years, I also realize these kinds of conversations literally rewire our brains and work their magic to strengthen our mental and emotional health, resilience, inner peace, well-being, and joy…
…so it kind of just seems wonderful all around.
Sharing here in case this super simple and life-giving question or evening ritual can serve you too.
We are sending big LOVE your way and would love to ask YOU…
“What went well today?”
