“I’ve already ‘failed’ to________, (insert whatever goal you set out to accomplish), so I might as well betray myself even more.”
Perhaps this looks like:
– “I’ve already wasted the day, so I might as well waste it even more.”
– “I’ve already gotten distracted, so I might as well allow myself to get distracted even more.”
– “I’ve already not done the thing I said I would do today, so I might as well not do it for the rest of the day.”
– “I’ve already been crabby to my loved one, so I might as well keep being crabby.”
– “I’ve already eaten unhealthily, so I might as well keep eating unhealthily.”
There are countless variations of this. And, chances are (since you are a dear and lovable human), you can relate.
While it is wonderful that we can give ourselves a break in these moments — and that “tomorrow” perpetually holds the hope of a fresh start and something better, brighter, and easier…
…this patterned way of thinking also robs us of the reset, recommitment, and recalibration available to us with each and every moment and breath.
Studies on “emotional inertia” show that how you feel in the morning often predicts how you’ll feel at night unless you disrupt the cycle with a conscious intervention or a “pattern interrupt.”
Therefore, here’s a quick “pattern interrupt” to keep handy this week — just so you don’t need to wait until “tomorrow” to be true to what brings you joy and what your heart already knows is best.
When you notice yourself saying a version of “I’ve already not done the thing I wanted to do, so I might as well keep not doing it,” I lovingly invite you to try this instead…
STEP 1: Recognize and appreciate this brand new moment. Right here, right now.
Find a quiet spot (if possible). It doesn’t need to be anything fancy — just a space where you can be present with yourself.
If it feels nourishing, I invite you to take a few deep, cleansing breaths, place one or both palms over your heart center and say something like:
“Thank you so much for this brand new beautiful moment that has never been here before, unbound by the past and filled with new possibilities yet unwritten. Whatever pattern I am experiencing right now is only a pattern, and a pattern can be changed.”
STEP 2: Self-forgiveness.
I now invite you to complete this prompt, silently or aloud:
“I forgive myself for…”
(When we use self-judgment to try to motivate change, chances are, it will spiral into other forms of self-punishment. Self-compassion and grace are much more effective strategies.)
STEP 3: Reconnect with how you want to feel, how you want to show up for yourself and others, what you want to create, what you want to experience, and what you want to prioritize and do.
Living a life that stays aligned with who you truly are and what you value requires both clarity and recommitting — over and over.
Use this prompt:
“I am recentered in, and I recommit to…”
(Name all the things that feel GOOD to plug back into!)
STEP 4: Palms and heart open, invite in Love, your intuition, your wiser self, whatever is sacred to you.
Now, I invite you to complete this prompt, silently or aloud:
“Guide me now to what will sync me back up with what my heart and soul truly desire.”
If you have a moment to sit there and listen, wonderful.
If not, you have at least called upon and invited in the wiser part of you, and you’ve tapped back into a greater consciousness and benevolence that moves through all of life and is here to support and guide you.
STEP 5: Take one tiny action in this new aligned direction.
Trust whatever flows forth from this prompt…
“My wiser self lovingly wants me to…”
Even one teeny tiny action in the direction of what you want to feel and experience is powerful, and it shifts the momentum in a different direction.
–
One final loving reminder…
We are creatures of habits and patterns (including many outdated ones that no longer serve)…
…and unless you do something to pause, get clear, and recalibrate, it’s easy to unconsciously allow something that already isn’t working to determine what will happen next.
May this new week bless you with the bounty of each new moment and breath and with opportunities to reconnect with the deeper light within — that is beneath and beyond whatever pattern you may be experiencing right now.
Abundant Love and Joy,
